Well, today not much happened, at least not much new.

The old headwall structure on the 24" pipe was smashed up using one of the excavators, and the first cut through the concrete dam was completed.

Here's the excavator smashing up the old headwall. These excavators are really powerful, and the operator stomped this pretty substantial concrete structure into gravel in a few minutes.

The junk in the foreground here is all that is left of the reinforced concrete headwall on the old pipe. This rubble will be "lost" under the riprap that will be at the exit of the new pipe.

It was sort of interesting to watch the operator get the excavator out of the ravine. It was easy to drive into the ravine, but too steep to drive out - the tracks just spun. He had to use the arm to more or less push the thing out of the ravine.

After this not much happened, except the first cut through the dam was completed. It took about 10 hours of cutting. The second cut gets started tomorrow. I hope it can be finished tomorrow, but I sort of doubt it. There will be a lot of setup that has to come first.

The fun continues tomorrow. In addition to more cutting, a crew should show up to build the forms for the new 60" pipe headwall structure. When that is done concrete will be poured for it.
